Standing water is the single biggest cause of hardwood damage. Wipe up spills promptly, use a damp — never wet — mop, and put a mat at every exterior door.
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Aim for 35–55% relative humidity year-round; a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer prevent gapping and cupping.
Vinegar, ammonia, bleach and oil soaps can dull or break down a finish. Use a manufacturer-approved hardwood cleaner or a barely-damp cloth.
Felt pads under all furniture legs, a runner in hallways, and trimmed pet claws will do more to preserve your finish than any product you can buy.
